The Valentine’s Day Effect

February 11th, 2008 · No Comments

February 14th - Valentine’s Day - a day for romance, chocolates, love, and marriage - or so one might think. However, since 2003, the LegalMatch database has consistently registered a spike in divorce and family law cases every year around this time. In 2006, they even created a name for this seemingly spontaneous rise in divorce - the “Valentine’s Day Effect.”

Over the last five years, divorce cases have shown an average 28% increase during the two weeks prior to and the two weeks following Valentine’s Day. Several explanations have been offered: for example, some theorize that the romantic tension and pressure associated with the Day of Love might be doing more harm than good. Others say that Valentine’s Day is a time when people step back and take stock of their love lives, comparing what they have with what they might have had. Still others blame the effects of the stressful winter holiday season for the surge in divorce cases.

Whatever the reason, Valentine’s Day appears to be as much of a time for loss as it is a time for love. If you are nearing the end of a marriage, the Austin divorce attorneys at Slater & Kennon understand what you are going through. They will work with you and for you to make sure you get through this difficult time as smoothly as possible. Call 512-472-2431 today.
