In the US, insurance is almost unaffordable for everyone that is in need of it. There are many couples now that are rushing to get married because of a future with a good health insurance policy. Visiting a doctor or even a trip to the hospital has become one of the more expensive things that you have to do with your money. A good health insurance policy can help to lower overall costs of your booming medical bills.

Divorce has also become a common factor because of health insurance policies. Some Americans have began to postpone their divorces for fear of not being able to have any type of health insurance after it’s finalized.

Although their marriage effectively ended years ago, former NJ mayor James McGreevey and his estranged wife Dina Matos did not formally file for divorce until spring of this year. The couple have agreed to split custody of their six year old daughter, but nearly every other aspect of their divorce has been a long, bitter battle for the couple. McGeevey resigned as governor in 2004 after publicly admitted that he is gay and had an affair during his marriage. A judge will be issuing a decision soon, perhaps this week, concerning the couple’s alimony and child support arrangements.

Matos is pursuing the possibility of suing McGreevey for fraud, claiming he knew he was gay when they married. If she wins her case, she could be awarded compensation for the 13 months she would have spent in the governor’s mansion in McGreevey had not resigned.

A New Zealand court has placed a 9 year old girl into court guardianship because her parents named her Talula Does the Hula from Hawaii. The court placed the girl in court guardianship in order to ensure that her name is changed.

The girl was so embarassed by her name that she refused to reveal what her name actually is to friends. Instead of going by her “official” name, the girl asked her friends to call her K. Family court Judge Robert Murfitt gave the order to take the girl away from her parents. In addition, Judge Murfitt criticized parents who give their children bizarre or “unique” names because it exposes the children to ridicule.

He said the child had a better insight about the situation than her parents, who had apparently not given any thought to the implications of their actions. The judge criticised the growing trend of parents choosing out-of-the-ordinary names for their children.

The girl has sinced legally changed her name. It was not revealed in an effort to maintain her privacy. New Zealand’s laws do not allow offensive names.

The state representatives have been bringing a new bill in to be deliberated on. This month a bill was passed that now allows a couple to take a premarital class in exchange for not having to pay the fee to get your marriage license.

This new bill that they are trying to pass is going to allow a couple of different options when a couple is looking to get a divorce in the state of Texas. This new bill says that the couple needs to take a 10 hour marriage strengthening class together to help their marriage. If the couple chooses not to take the class, the couple will be required to wait at least 2 years in order to finalize their divorce. This bill will go before the committee in Texas and will hopefully make a decision about it some time this month.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Borrough President Helen Marshall and Queens Distric Attorney Richard Brown, along with a group of celebrities, met on July 16 to open the city’s new Family Justice Center. The goal is to streamline the process of seeking safety and justice for survivors of domestic violence. Prosecutors, family law attorneys and social workers will all come together under one roof to provide women, men and children fleeing domestic abuse with whatever help and support they need.

Despite numerous goverment programs such as this one, domestic violence remains a widespread problem. Six million American women are murdered each year by their husbands or boyfriends - and 70% of children living in homes where one parent is abused, are abused themselves.

A task force organized by the State Bar Association of North Dakota has proposed several reforms to the state’s existing family law system.

Under the terms of the proposal, which is aimed at addressing concerns about child custody and visitation rights, divorcing parents would be obligated to submit parenting plans to the court for approval before the divorce can be finalized. Disputes after the divorce occurs would be handled by a “parenting coordinator,” a type of mediator whose decisions would be binding.

Potentially loaded terminology such as “custodial parent” and “visitation schedule” would also be changed under the proposal.

Navigating the family law system is difficult without experienced and professional legal representation.

A Rhode Island Superior Court judge’s decision this week marked the latest setback for a lesbian couple who have been trying to get a divorce since last year.

On Wednesday, Judge Patricia Hurst refused to consider the case of Margaret Chambers and Cassandra Ormiston, saying that the court had no jurisdiction over such family law matters. Chamber and Ormiston, who married in 2004 not long after R.I. legalized same-sex marriage, were denied a divorce by the state Supreme Court last year. The Court held that, because the statute which created the family court system was predicated on the idea of a one man, one woman marriage, the family court had no authority to give a divorce to same-sex couples.

Though Judge Hurst declined to hear the couple’s case, she did question the constitutionality of the state Supreme Court’s ruling, and suggested that the law could be challenged in family court.

If your marriage is coming to an end, you will need competent legal representation to ensure that your rights are respected throughout the proceedings.

As the war in Iraq drags on, it has been taking a heavy toll on the relationships of many US soldiers. Statistics show over 3,000 more military divorces, from 5,500 in 2001 to 8,700 in 2007 - an increase of over 50% in just 5 years. While the relationship strain caused by active duty military service is nothing new, the extended and frequent tours of soldiers in Iraq appears to be having an especially significant impact.

In response to the growing crisis, the army has launched a series of relationship-based initiatives which offer advice, counseling, and support to soldiers in strained relationships.
